The Icom IC-9700 is an allmode transceiver for the VHFand UHF bands 2m, 70cm and 23cm. The IC-9700 is an 'SDR' transceiver, a Software Defined Radio. That means that the received signal is digitized as soon as possible for further processing. On 2m and 70cm a direct sampling system with appropiate anti-aliasing filter is used, on 23cm the signal is mixed down to an IF around 341 MHz and then digitized. The transmitted signal is also generated on the digital stage and then converted to an analog signal which is further amlified. Due to the use of stae-of-the-art digital compnents and processing Icom achieves excellent RF properties like sensitivity, selectivity and large signal handling. Future technical developments can be reflected in software and future upgrades. You do not need any classical filters anymore, with the processing on the digital stage you can define nearly unlimited filters, for each mode individually.
The transmitter of the IC-9700 generates 100W on 2m, 75W on 70cm and 10W on 23cm. In combination with a directional antenna this power is sufficient for weak signal work and DX on 2m and 70cm, also in FT-8. The power of 10W on 23W is sufficient to reach nearby repeaters in FM or D-Star. But also Satellites come into reach with this transceiver! Dedicated memories help preparing for any frequency system used by a satellite, when operating the tracking of Doppler shift compensation follows the pre-programmed type of the satellite in normal or reverse mode. Even dualwatch or full-diplex operations are possible with satellites.
The digital technology of the IC-9700 enables modern features like a live spectrum and waterfall display, like you know them from the IC-7300 and other, similar radios. With such a display no band opening goes unnoticed, you can immediately see where the action is. The display is a touch panel and permits a flexible design of operating controls without putting too many knobs on the front panel. So the transceiver remains easy to operate without despite is complex possibilities. Side by side with an IC-7300 you will have a superb station, covering anything from HF to 23cm, with a single operational concept.
Of course Icom continues it's successful digital modulation strategy with the IC-9700: without the requirement for any optional items the transceiver supports D-Star voice (DV) and data (DD) Modes. In cooperation with many handheld, mobile and desktop transceivers of various manufacturers a new world of communication possibilities opens up. The DD mode supports up to 128 kbps transmission speed. Just for D-Satr the radio offers 2000 memories for easy recall of digital repeaters. Of course more than 100 conventional memories are available as well.
The frequency stability is already excellent with ±0.5ppm. For very high precision and stability requirements an external 10 MHz clock can be fed to the radio. Further the IC-9700 is equipped with all connectors which you can expect from a state-of-art transceiver: LAN for remote control and upgrades, USB for digital modes and CAT control and much more. Due to the consistent use of the same connectors since many years, you can use a lot of existing accessories like interfaces, remote control systems and so on.
