Technical description IC-9700

The Icom IC-9700 is an all-mode transceiver for the VHF and UHF bands 2 m, 70 cm and 23 cm. It is an SDR, a Software Defined Radio. This means that the received signal is digitised as early as possible and then further processed. Direct sampling is used for 2 m and 70 cm, the 23 cm band is brought to an intermediate frequency around 341 MHz via a mixer and digitized afterwards. This way, Icom achieves excellent RF characteristics in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and large-signal strength. Classic crystal filters are no longer required, but almost any filter can be defined individually for each operating mode. Further technical development can be implemented with software upgrades.
Transmission processing is also done digitally, after which the generated signal is converted and amplified in analogue. This way, very good spectral purity and excellent phase noise values are achieved. The frequency stability is already quite good at less than ± 0.5 ppm. For particularly high demands on accuracy, an external 10 MHz reference signal can be fed in. In addition, the IC-9700 is equipped with all the connections you would expect from a modern transceiver: LAN for remote control and updates, USB for digital modes and CAT control and much more. Thanks to the consistent use of uniform connections for accessories, remote control, etc., the IC-9700 also makes it easy to continue using existing accessories.
With a width of 240 mm, but a height of only 94 mm and a depth of 238 mm as well as 4.7 kg, the IC-9700 is a compact device despite all its functions and transmitting power. The power supply of 13.8 V / 18 A is possible with a mains adapter, but also mobile – a mobile mount is also available –, or on a field day or expedition.

ATTENTION! With this transceiver is NO frequency extension possible!

Application description IC-9700

The Icom IC-9700 is the counterpart to the IC-7300: it takes over where the latter leaves off. Side by side with the IC-7300, this results in a station from shortwave to 23 cm with a uniform, practical operating concept. However, the IC-9700 is also the optimal device for anyone who does not value shortwave operation, but wants to have everything on VHF and UHF.
Visually, the most striking feature is the transceiver's high-resolution 4.3 inch / 10.9 cm colour touch display. It allows a flexible design of the operating elements without overloading the transceiver's front panel. Thus, the unit remains easy to operate despite all its complexity. A constantly updated display of the waterfall spectrum is possible during reception, and the speed and bandwidth are adjustable.
The transmitter of the IC-9700 delivers 100 watts on 2 m, 75 watts on 70 cm and 10 watts on 23 cm to do DX on 2 m and 70 cm. 10 watts on 23 cm is more than enough for the nearest FM or D-Star repeater in the area. The IC-9700 is also well equipped for satellite operation: Special memories allow the preparation of all possible frequency schemes, then in operation the tracking of the Doppler shift is done in normal or reverse position, depending on the type of satellite repeater. In satellite mode, dual watch or even full-duplex operation is possible.
The transceiver can be used in D-Star mode without additional options. Together with many FM handheld and mobile radios from different manufacturers, this opens up completely new communication possibilities. The DD (Digital Data) mode offers up to 128 kbps transmission speed. For D-Star alone, 2000 memories are available in which almost all relays and stations can be stored. In addition, there are of course more than 100 classic memories for other operating modes.

Founded in 1954, the Japanese company Icom is one of the best-known brands in both the professional and amateur radio sectors. Icom supplies analogue and digital radio systems for marine, aeronautical, professional and amateur radio as well as satellite radio. With the IC-9700, Icom established for the first time the possibilities of a direct sampling SDR in a VHF/UHF transceiver.
