The TS-990S Kenwood is the new flagship in a successful era of transceivers which was heralded in 1973 by the TS-900 and continued on popular devices such as TS-930, TS-940 and TS-950. However, for the first time on this transceiver to represent the band scope, NF-scope, S-meter and many other settings and operating conditions of a dual TFT display is used!
The Main Receiver of the TS-990S operates with a first IF of 8.24 MHz. The resulting dynamic range is even with strong signals in addition to its own payload significantly greater than a higher first IF. A newly developed mixer with generously dimensioned components ensures an IP3 value of +40 dB or more. 5 narrowband High-IP-Roofing-Filters were used for the main receiver. Besides the bandwiths of 270 and 500 Hz for CW, there are other, at 2.7 kHz for SSB and 6 and 15 kHz for AM and FM. Also as standard is a high-stability TCXO with ± 1ppm.
The Sub Receiver is an evolution of the receiver of the TS-590. The receiver operates on the bands from 160m - 20m also with the down-conversion principle. This makes the second receiver to a full-fledged single receier. For the second receiver Kenwood has donated his own DSP in the TS-990S. Total provided in this device as 3 single DSP their service. The Bandscope and each receiver have a separate DSP.
The Transmitter provides with the built-in power supply an output power of 200 W on all bands. To keep the IMD signal clear in the TS-990S Mosfet transistors were used with 50V. Independent fans with temperature-controlled speed and a heat sink with ribbed ensure ventilation of the switching power supply, the antenna tuner and amplifier.
Worldwide, the TS-990S installed the first time a dual TFT display. On the 7 "wide main screen you see next to a waterfall display the most important information, such as frequency, mode, and the status of various functions. This half-sized subdisplay is above the main VFO knob also shows the set frequency. Addition allows to be this display also represent the received NF spectrum.
In addition to the extensive memory functions, new split modes and various connectors for external accessories and remote control were equally implemented. With the free software available from Kenwood ARCP-990 can be from your PC very easily manage the memory and most of the functions of the transceiver directly operate. On the back are additional NF in- and outputs. Among them is an optical digital interface port, and a USB port. 2 additional USB ports are located on the front panel.
